2-14-2009 The slight chill on the air made for perfect predator calling this morning. It has been a dry winter and with light rains coming during last week and spring on the air, the time was prime for coyote hunting. The first location proved to be a failure. The sun rose revealing the brown winter and drought scorched grass for as far as the eye could see. Green trees lined the creek, but no coyotes were found. The second try turned out to be better. Brush and tree surrounded 100-yard wide black land clearing. Two calls from our trusty Phantom and the coyote was on his way. A 100-yard shot with a 22-250 allowed the coyote to run just 20 yards before dropping. No pictures. This was a mangy, flea bitten song dog that had seen its better day. Well, the morning wasn't over with. The third spot along the creek and waist high blue stem made for excellent calling. The wind had picked up, but it was blowing in our favor. After three hits with the rabbit distress call a bobcat emerged near 25 yards which is well in range of my 243. Overall a successful day. 2 for 3 is a really nice morning. 6-25-2008 The coyotes have been really yapping it up in the early evening hours lately. I took a short hunt last night to see what I could come up with. Due to unexpected circumstances, I was unable to get out there as early as I would have liked. Never-the-less, I stayed there for a while and sure enough they started howling around 9:00 p.m. They were about one mile due south and didn't seem to change their position during the time I spent listening. I am planning another hunt really soon. 2-7-2008 What set out to be a routine skunk run quickly escalated into a high speed coyote chase. Within the first 1/2 mile of the run I spotted eyes near the first pond where typically raccoons are known to be, but I quickly recognized that the eyes were moving at a higher rate of speed than any raccoon can manage and I knew I was in for something more. It was a full grown coyote and the race was on. I pulled in behind him and was holding my own for a while. I had to drive, hold the spotlight and keep two dogs from falling off and his challenge was to dodge the cows. I had my trusty sidearm, but my hands were full and I didn't have time to stop and draw my weapon without the beast slipping away. The close portion of the marathon ended when I plunged into an 8 foot wide ditch full of water and one of the dogs jumped off and continued to chase. Well, I never saw that coyote again after searching the area for a while and it took about fifteen minutes for that dog to show back up. I heard her barking off in the distance when I stopped to open a gate, but later I shut off my motor and listened for her, but to no avail. This leg of the race may have ended, but there will be other races. You can count on it! 12-11-2007 Well, there haven't been any coyote hunts conducted in a while. The song dogs were howling back a few weeks ago, but I was too busy to make a run. There will be hunts coming soon. 6-5-2007 A big thanks goes out to the Moderator for fixing this page. I inadvertently botched the whole page up by trying to update it using Microsoft Word. I won't try that again. 5-18-2007 No hunts have been conducted lately. One coyote was heard last week at the homeplace, but a quick spotlight run was unsuccessful. More hunts will be lined up shortly. It is fishing season and I have seen no coyotes while out on the lake. A hunt was conducted in
the A hunt was conducted
this evening, but the results were not to good.
It was a little too windy to go, but we decided it was worth giving it a
shot. After two setups and lots of calling, no coyotes were
sighted. Better luck next time. 2-22-2007 Well, I reformatted the
page so that the latest updates are on the top. I hope this makes
visiting the site more convenient. Last night I drove my
four wheeler behind my garage and there was a coyote, less than 100
yards from my house. I chased him and got stuck in the back corner of the
pasture, but it was worth it. I will have to try and call some in
there. It is the time of year when they are on the move. 2-18-2007 New hunts are being
planned for the coming weekend. Who will prevail? Man or beast?
Updates coming soon. 2-10-2007
Score one for the good
guys. A coyote was spotted and bagged by Greg and Brian today. Greg slowed him
down with a 250 yard running shot using his trusty Savage .243 and Brian
finished him off with steel shot from an 870 Express Magnum Shotgun. The icy weather down in
It appears that the
crows have found where our corn is. We have had a pair come by each day
and eat a little of the corn, but today a check of the trap revealed that all
the corn had been eaten, even in the trap. Upon viewing the pictures on
the camera, it was uncovered that the word had spread and there was a murder of
crows chowing down. We are working on a
solution. 12-18-2006 I have been criticized
for not providing absolute proof of catching hogs so here it is. As you
will see in the picture there is a hog in the trap and he is attempting to
escape. The pictures of this
hog along with the first one hanging from a tree are on another person's camera
and are currently unavailable. I will post them as soon as they are
emailed to me. Here is an additional
picture with more hogs. 12-13-2006 Score one more for the
home team. The second pig was trapped and cleaned today. A medium
sized sow. She is on ice and the trap is set for another round.
Stay tuned...this is getting exciting. 12-11-2006 The weekend was a bust, no hams were spotted; however a late afternoon check
of the trap on Monday revealed that we had our first catch. A medium-large sized boar. White
with small black spots. The trap is rebaited
and ready to go once again. 12-7-2006 This morning's check
revealed that the porkers have returned. They ate all the corn that I had
scattered as well as all that was inside the trap. I wired the trap door
open a few days ago so none were caught. I didn't get any pictures of
them because the camera's battery had run out. I rebaited
the area and put a fresh battery in the camera. Should
have new images tomorrow if I can make it by there. 12-03-2006 This morning we went on
an unsuccessful coyote hunt, however we did retrieve a few insightful photos
from our game camera. Below is the best of the pictures. There
appears to be at least three medium to full grown hogs and numerous younger
multicolor hogs. Note the time stamp on the picture. 3:01
a.m. Too late for evening hunters and way too early for
morning hunters. Looks like we will have to make
a 3:00 a.m. run or an overnight camping trip. If you look closely
at the upper left-hand corner of the picture you will notice our trap.
They ate all the corn around it, but evidently someone bumped it and triggered
the door because the trap was closed, but hogless.
More coming soon. 11-29-2006 Well, I was over at the
creek property placing some corn in a few strategic locations where hogs have
been when I happened to spook a few deer. They watched from afar as I
scattered the corn and didn't seem too bothered that I was there. Why am
I talking about corn, deer and hogs on my predator page, you ask? Well, I
was over there scouting coyote hunting ground last week when I noticed signs of
the porkers so I couldn't resist trying to bag a nice ham. Now when I am
out calling in the song dogs there is the option of a bonus. The hogs
have been there lately because there are tracks over the four wheeler tracts
that I left six days ago. November The coyotes are
starting to move with the onset of colder weather. They can be heard
almost every night howling. The Savage has been field tested and is ready
for battle. Several shredded milk jugs are evidence of that fact.
Some scouting was done near the rice field and there was evidence of coyotes
and hogs running along the creek. More scouting will be done tomorrow in
advance of the main hunt this weekend. With some luck, I may have a
picture of a coyote to post here soon.
This guy had some good
luck. It appears to be an authentic picture, but some people are getting real
good with photoshop. He even has some foxes and
bobcats on the top row. |
